Our Top Quality Ingredient -Shea Butter

At NUMMO, we like to completely open with our customers! Find out more about where our Shea Butter comes from.

WHO PRODUCES IT?

Our Shea Butter is made by women in Mali who earn their money through Shea butter and beauty. The Shea butter industry in Mali is run by women and ONLY women. Women farmers turn Shea nuts into Shea butter which can be used for a range of things including cooking and beauty. Mali is one of the richest nations in the world, though the people of Mali are amongst the poorest on the planet. This is why here at NUMMO we are aiding in finally putting an end to poverty while helping you benefit from the amazing properties of Malian Shea Butter.

WHERE DOES IT ORIGINATE FROM?

The word Shea comes from the Bambara name S’i, the name given to the Shea trees in Mali. Shea trees are found growing along the Savanna Belt region, or the Shea Belt as traders would call it.  In African pharmacology, Shea Butter is used for its medicinal properties and benefits. It’s wound healing properties made it effective in regenerating skin that has been wounded as well as diminishing stretch marks and discoloration. Studies done in the 1940’s discovered that African people who used Shea Butter experienced less incidents of skin diseases than the ones who did not use it.

HOW IS OUR SHEA BUTTER DIFFERENT?

Even though Shea Butter has been used for centuries in many countries across Africa, Shea Butter has recently gained popularity for cosmetic use in the Western World.
Many known western companies use Shea Butter from Ghana which  has similar benefits for the skin as Shea Butter from Mali although it can be thick and cause build up on the scalp. Malian Shea Butter is from a different tree, in a different country, in a different environment resulting in it being thinner, creamier and softer. This is what makes NUMMO so unique, and what allows us to formulate our 2 in 1 Deep Moisturizing Hair and Body Butter.
